If you seek to monitor power consumption of a single device, check out the Kill-A-Watt.

If you seek to monitor entire household power consumption, and it's real-time cost, contact your power company. These devices are called In-Home Displays. Since they involve configuration at the meter base itself, it would be considered tampering if you installed one yourself.

Not all power companies offer an in-home display, as they are an emerging technology. Ask a customer service rep about other ways to monitor your consumption.
