Need to get a fast, reliable home broadband router?

I need some tips on a router that can handle heavy torrenting, voip, and online gaming (at the same time too :P) - wired or wireless. I currently have the SMC 7004VBR and D-Link WBR-1310 for wireless and it just doesn't cut it. Tried the WRT54G (ver 6 - i know about the limited ram, but can't find v2 anywhere) and a few others which perform way worse, but can't afford anything over $100.

I have a broadband cable connection with 10 Mbps down/ 1 Mbps up (Rogers Extreme). Even if I have only 1 file downloading and limit the connections to 30-40 the entire network slows down to a crawl. Lately it's slow even if I don't download, but speedtest.net reports the full speed.

It would be a bonus if the router is available in Canadian retailers.

Thanks a lot for suggestions.

  1. I can recommend RANGEMAX DUAL BAND WIRELESS-N ROUTER WNDR 3300. Works great for me, worth the money. You can buy it cheap on Ebay. Here is a link to tech specs:

It is a dual-band router which is a good thing to have if you want to stay backwards compatible. (For example, if your friends come over, and they have 2.4 GHz wifi cards working on 802.11b/g standard, then this would work for them as well.)

Here is a good website about what to look for when shopping for a wifi router:

And this webpage talks about Wi-Fi standards:

  2. netgear rangemax is a good one
