Need to identify children's book for niece that my sister used to own?

Hi everyone,

I am looking for a book for my niece for Christmas that my sister (my niece's mom) used to have around 2-3 years old. I can't remember much about it except that there was a little girl who was a hedgehog, bear, or some type of animal and there was a page with a baked potato that the little girl described as "fluffy on the inside, crunchy on the outside. Yum yum, all gone." In fact, the yum yum line might have been used on other pages (sorry, Ican't remember).

There were illustrations on each page and I'm guessing it was for children ages 1-3. I believe there was a mother (an animal) in it too. Sorry for the vague description I just remember my little sister could recite that baked potato line before she could even read. I think it would make a great gift.

Thanks,

Bob

  1. Dang Bob! That sounds so familliar. Was the animal's name Francis? She's the only one I can think of She was a badger. I think the author's last name is Hobin or Hobbin or something. I asked my daughter if she remembered Franci eating a baked potato but she said all she rememberes is the bread and jelly.

    Sorry if this didn't help.

  2. It sounds like Russell Hoban and his Francis the Badger series

(Bread and jam for Francis, bedtime for francis)

  3. Check with your local library.  The Librarians are very knowledgeable about older books too.

I can't find anything about it myself.  Sorry I can't be of more help.

I will keep looking and ask my co-workers tomorrow.

  4. I think it might have been Frances.  She ate only bread and jam for awhile

then got sick of a steady diet of it.  She was a raccoon? i think.  Bread and

Jam for Frances was the name of the book.

  5. Thanks guys, but I'm about positive that the animal characters wore some human clothing (the mom, i think may have wore a hat) and the book was published in the mid to late 80s. I meant to type "when my sister was 2-3 years old" so that must have confused people.

The thing I most remember is the page with the potato and the little girl said "fluffy on the inside, crunchy on the outside. Yum yum, all gone."

Sorry for being so vague but I hope I can find this book as it would make a killer Christmas gift.

    Thanks!

    Bob

  6. It might be one of Jan Brett's books.

You can go to the second sight and hear the book.
