HEY GUYS... ANY INFORMATION ON BUDGIES WELCOME

so... i have a large avoiry and it (at the moment) has 2 chickens, 1 bengali, 2 green singing finches, and 2 canaries.

the avory has a large inside area ( in a heated shed) and a very large outside area.

I would like one (maybe two) budgies (small)

I dont know much about them only that they would be living in the avory not in the house and that they can talk if interacted with them daily.

HOW DO YOU CARE FOR THEM?

what would i feed them ?

could i keep them in the avory ?

would it get too cold? (england)

would they get along with the other birds?

if they were to become ill how much money would need to be put by for vetanary care?

and any other important information on them

i will only adopt/buy them if i am sure i will be able to care for it properly.

oh also.... how long do they live if cared for well ?

THANK-YOU !

  1. Go on the web and look up Dutch-Pied Budgerigars  < (sp)

  2. Budgies are fairly easy to care for. They have a larger language base than many realize. The just talk super fast.

Keep them clean, and well fed.

  3. Hi. give them a kuttle fish to peck on as well , this will help maintain their beaks and are only about 25p from the pet shop.

  4. just take care of them like you do for ur other birds

  5. Hi!

I can answer some questions for you.

    1. Feed Budgies a formulated diet, like Harrisons Pellets or LaFarbers Nutri-An cakes, also fresh, chopped fruits and vegetables, cooked grains, small amounts of protein foods.  Avoid chocolate and avacado.

    2. You can keep them in the aviary IF your wire spacing is less than 1/2 inch and the wire is completely zinc and lead free.  Unlike the other birds you have, budgies are chewers, and may chew the wire.  If there is any doubt as to the safety of the wire, DO NOT get the budgies.  Heavy metal poisoning is potentially fatal.

    3. Yes, it will get too cold in the winter.  When the temp is regularly below 68-70 degrees farenheit, you'll need to set up a cage inside or heat the aviary.

    4. They should get along ok with the other birds, but keep an eye on them for the first month or so, and observe appropriate quarrantine procedures for the first 6 weeks after you get them, before introducing the budgies into the aviary.

    5. In the US (California), an anual vet check up for a budgie costs me about $100 american (I don't know how many pounds that is, maybe 50?).  If it gets sick, meds can vary from $20 for a simple antibiotic to hundreds or even thousands of dollars for surgery or other treatments, depending on what is wrong with the bird.  It is so various, this is a hard question to answer.

    6. Budgies can live for up to 18-20 years if fed and properly cared for, but sadly few live that long.

For more information on bird and budgie care, and for links, visit www.mickaboo.org

There are also links to contact info for people who are somewhat experts on budgies and there care (people who I learned from).

PS- no grit or sawdust in the cage!  They will eat it and have digestive problems.  The best liner is newspaper.
