When I get a little older, I'd like to go into the ambassadorial career line, preferably as a European-American ambassador; what are the qualifications that are best for the job and what does it usually pay? What are the up/down sides? Can anyone tell me?

  1. They are political appointees.

So become rich, donate a lot of money to a political party or presidential candidate, and when he's elected, ask for an Ambassadorship.

You can become the head of a consulate by joining the State Department and working your way up (via a Foriegn Service Officer).  You have to apply for a position, take a test, usually have a 4 year degree in Political Science, from Yale, Harvard or other ivy league school.
