  1. NH4 via kolhapur is undoubtedly the better road.

But if you are on holiday and have an extra day in hand try NH 17 and you can also take in place like Kashid, Ganpatiphule and other interesting places. Also the scenic beauty through Konkan will be at the best of it's splendour due to the rains.

A MUV/SUV or a larger Sedan with good tyres should do it for you. Please note the roads are through 'ghats' and are sloping and winding continuously. Having a back-up driver (if possible) is a good idea

  4. Baisically the road to Goa via Kolhapur is the best option. You take the expressway past pune then continue on the same road ( NH4) to Nipani ( 1 hour after the kolhapur cutting), then take a right  onto a state road to savantwadi via Ajra and Amboli, then into goa. It generally takes me between 9 to 10.5 hours one way. The roads are fantastic all the way except a small patch near Ajra. You can easily maintain a speed of 110 120 on Nh4 and 60-70 on the state road. The route is probably longer by around 60km. as compared to the older route in NH17. But this is much faster and safer as it is 4 laned with dividers. State road is 2 lane.

  5. kolhapur road is pretty good - basically take the NH4, then take NH 17 beyond panvel.  the driver is a good one - enjoy it - u can do it in 10 hours if u do only one stop.
