Question:

Need to know who accessed my public folder on a network?

This is really silly but I have recently found out that some of my missing webcam videos were stored in my public folder and I share a wireless network with a few of my co-workers. I need to find out if anyone has accessed any of my shared files. Basically I need to know if there is an event or activity log. Someone told me to run the following command "arp -a" but I have no clue what the information means.

Help me before I go crazy!!!!

  1. Here is one thing to try.  Right Click My Computer, go to Manage.  Click the + next to Shared Folders.  Go to sessions.  This will let you know if anyone is accessing your data now.  However, if it was done days ago and your computer and/or their computer has restarted since it wont tell you anything, since its an instant and not a log.

  2. Unfortunately you probably can't. It is possible to log that sort of activity but it is not turned on by default. From what I know it's setup through the networks server so you may not have access to the logs even if they were being created.

I don't know of anyway to setup your own machine to track that sort of thing.

Forget arp-a. It will show you who is on the network and some info about them but really won't help you here.
