I need a piece that is fairly dense and would like it to be approximately 2' deep and approximately 4' x 4'. I will carve out center and add dirt and grass in order for geese to lay eggs and keep away from preditors in the night. The only block I found was $250.00. I sure would like to find one a little more reasonable. Any suggests on finding a block or a better way to build a dock for water fowl is appreciated.

  1. Try any local machine or cycle shops , they ship parts and cycles in foam packed crates , they are about 4'x8' the ones I have seen and used , put 2 or 3 of them together in a wood box and they should be more than what you need ... Just make sure that the foam  is protected from the geese /ducks that will be using it for they will chew at it and it will make them sick or if they eat enough of it kill them ...

  2. I don't know where you can get such a huge thing of styrofoam, but could you use lots of smaller styrofoam boxes glued together? I know that veterianry hospitals get all their vaccines and other medicines delivered in styrofoam boxes to keep the contents cool, all about the size of small coolers, you could go to the vet hospitals of your area (maybe even people hospitals?) and let them know you are collecting the boxes for a project for geese, and the employees will usually be glad to call you when they have some to give you, or would hold them back for you if you stop by once a week to get them.  Just an idea :)

  3. Check with commercial refrigeration companies that install walk-in coolers for convenience stores, supermarkets, Wal-mart, restaurants, etc. Ask them about purchasing old freezer panels.  I got mine for free.  Walk-in coolers are built by assembling these freezer panels which form the walls of the cooler room.  Companies often tear out an old cooler before installing a new one.  The old panels are hauled back to the plant and stacked with all the other rusting, stacks which will continue to accumulate for as long as the company is in business.  These panels are insulated with blocks of foam. about 12" thick and about 4'x8' in size.  All you have to do is remove the thin metal sheets that encase the foam block, and, if needed, easily stack 2 of them together for your geese.
