  1. I live in Spain and use Bankinter.  They have English speaking staff and internet banking also in English.  It is quite easy to open a bank account.  Take your passport along, they will take a photocopy and return it to you.  I didn't need a NIE number. You don't actually need any cash to open an account with either.  They will talk you through all of the accounts on offer.  If you want to transfer cash from the U.K. into your account, haggle with how much they will charge you for this.  The banks are not like the U.K. run banks. They want your business and you can often talk them into giving you a good deal.

  2. In order to open a bank account in Spain you will have to have an N.I.E. number, numero identificacion de extranjeros, which you get from your local ploice station.

There is quite alot of difference between different banks and their charges, I find Unicaja quite fair, but it is aways worth enquiring from a number of banks what they charge for various transactions, usually quite a bit more than U.K.banks

  3. if you need a bank account all you need is your passport you can open one. some may ask for your NIE number once you have it. it is like the British national insurance.

even if you have a british bank like lloyds it makes no difference as it 's cllassed as a different bank. different country

  4. Several of the English banks have got Spanish operations BUT – a word of warning – the Spanish banks are completely separate and you will need to open a new account in Spain.

Additionally, several of the Spanish banking groups have specifically targeted ex-pat customers and offer a full range of services in a variety of languages. CAM and Solbank, in particular, have worked extremely hard to attract international customers.

Most banks now have internet and telephone banking facilities and often you can choose which language you wish to work in.

  5. I bank with CAM & Popular, both very good and both have all services in English. I did not need my NIE number, just my passport, I opened my accounts four years ago but have never seen anything to say you have to have an NIE first, an NIE number is not required if you are not staying here on a  permanent basis or not buying a home. All you need to show is a passport and if you are not going to be resident, make sure the bank is aware of that. If you are going to apply for a mortgage, then you will need an NIE and usually the bank deals with this for you once you have given them the details to apply for you, they can usually expedite the issue of the number much faster than you applying yourself.

Most accounts will give a cash point card, you may be offered a Mastercard or Visa, but they will be in the form of debit cards and not credit, but usefull if you need to shop from here online. Most other cards will be Maestro which can be used in most shops when supported with your photo driving licence or your passport

  6. www.bankinter.es

this is my bank, they have always been great with me, and they speak English and you can check online in English too.
