Need to produce more superstars claims Ford – Cricket News Update
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Xavier-Ford-c60657, the Lankan Head Coach, believes that Sri Lankan cricket will struggle to compete with major Test playing nations if they are not able to produce some more superstars in the near future.
The current team is heavily reliant on the likes of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TM-Dilshan-c2691, all of whom form an integral part of their batting line-up. However, given their age and the amount of cricket played these days, it is highly
unlikely that all can extend their stays with the national side beyond the 2015 World Cup.
All three have further shared added responsibility in terms of captaining the side over the past 5 years. After Jayawardene relinquished his role in 2007, Sangakkara took charge of the side, before Dilshan was asked to fill the boots following the final
defeat in the 2011 World Cup.
However, the latter’s tenure was a highly unsuccessful one for the team where they failed to claim a series’ win. A change in the board room further followed, and Jayawardene was given the arm band for the second time.
His stint has helped the side achieve some success, but he has openly declared the desire to relinquish his role in the near future, with the possibility of a taking a final call in the early parts of next year.
Ford, who also took charge in surprising circumstances, was quick to add his say on the matter, where he wants the board to act strongly and start an emerging player programme. While the likes of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/LD-Chandimal-c1831 are considered as future
stars, Ford was keen to see some younger players taking on added responsibility.
"What is really important for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 cricket now is be aware that some of these players - superstars who have done great service to the game - are not going to be around for that much longer and an emerging player program of real intensity needs to be
put in place urgently," Ford said. "We need to start producing some more superstars and we need it to happen pretty quickly. That I see as a very important part, as to the future for Sri Lanka."
