Question:

Need to recheck in baggage for a connecting flight?

My friend is going to South Africa next month. We booked her flights and she has two change-overs before she gets to her final destination. Here is her flight-

Manchester - Zurich (Swiss Airlines)

Zurich - Johannesburg (Swiss Airlines)

Johannesburg - Phwalabora (South Africa)

From what I have read she will not need to worry about her baggage when she gets to Zurich as Swiss will get them onto her next flight to Johannesburg. But when she gets to Jo'burg will she need to collect her baggage and check-in again as she is flying with a different airline? Is it best to contact the airlines and ask?

Thanks!

  1. hello , if  your Friend traveling from Manchester city the airline limited the passengers to one carry on bag, if it has to be just Little bit larger then a briefs case. and when she arrive in to south Africa she needs to claim her language and get processed through customs, before she take her final flight.

however, coming back to Manchester, she can have two carry  on bags with Little restrictions.

  2. I think she has to recheck the baggage in Johannesburg, because customs is there. Phwalabora might be only a domestic airport.

  3. Yes, your friend will have to re-check her luggage at Johannesburg. Johannesburg is the first port of entry in South Africa, so she must clear customs and immigration there. She must reclaim her luggage in order to clear customs.

There should be a baggage re-check station near customs, so she will probably not have to haul her bags to the ticket counter.

She will not have to re-check her bags for the connection in Zurich
