Ok. I can't afford to buy an A/C. Its getting pretty hot out and alll I have is a fan. Anyone have any creative ideas about how to stay cool without a/c?

  1. Mind over matter.

Or go swimming, stay in the shade, drink cool things or put ice on your face, etc.

  2. When I was pregnant in Hartford, CT and the temp was 102 degrees, I used to soak my feet in a bucket of ice water while watching my daughter play in the kiddie pool. It really cooled me off!

  3. There's no way to truly "beat the heat;" a/c was invented to help us tackle the problem.

-Drape blankets across the windows. They're usually thicker than blinds, and they'll absorb the heat.

-For a quick cool-down, take a cold bath or shower, then sit in front of the fan naked.

-If you have to do anything that involves a lot of movement in the house (such as cleaning), do it early in the morning, when it's coolest.

-Keep yourself hydrated. Have something to drink on hand, even if you aren't currently thirsty.

-Open the windows around the house. This will promote air circulation.

-If you're sweating while the fan is blowing on you, then the only thing you're really doing is blowing hot air onto yourself. If you can, put the fan in the window, blowing toward the outside, you'll feel hotter, but the temperature in the room will actually slightly decline.

    -Munch on ice chips.

-If you need to go out (such as errands), don't go out every day doing one small thing; try to lump them into one big trip. While you're running around, try to go to places that you know will have air conditioning, such as malls and stores. If you're at a grocery store, don't be afraid to take a little extra time in the dairy & frozen food sections.

  4. A fan, a swimming pool.  Basically you can't stay cool without AC, which is why AC was invented.

  5. It sounds really "cheap", but if you have a regular window, tape aluminum foil in the top half and it will cut the temp in the room at least ten degrees. It really does work, also drink lots of fluids.

  6. Cold shower and then lay in front of the fan, keep the shades and curtains pulled shut so the sunlight doesn't heat up the place.
