Question:

Need to sublet my apt, but my lease says no sublets. What to do?

I have signed a new lease, with 3 other people, for next year, which starts in September. My old lease isn't up until the end of September. Is there any safe way to secretly sublet for a month, without my rental agency knowing? What about utility bills?

Also, if it is the case that I sublet to someone for this month, should I make them sign something?

Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks in advance..

  1. If your lease states that no sublets are allowed, then why on earth do you think you CAN sublet ?  Just pay the month's rent involved.  It can't be THAT much.

  2. This is unbelievably dangerous and illegal. That said, have you spoken to your landlord? You may be able to discuss your renting needs. He/she will likely still make you pay the rent for September at your old place, but you'd still be able to move out. Or you could find someone to take over your lease and renew it at the end of September, which works like your subletting idea, just legally. Doing it that way allows you turn off your utilities and have them switched to the landlord's, making you only pay for the rent.

  3. If you proceed with a sublet even though your lease prohibits its, you may find yourself with two lawsuits.  Once from the sublet-tor and one from the landlord.

  4. yeah, looks like you just get to pay rent at 2 places for that month.
