    1992 - North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) signed (Dec. 17).

    1993 - British House of Commons approves European unity pact (May 20). Maastricht Treaty takes effect, creating European Union (Nov. 1).

    1994 - US sends forces to Persian Gulf (Oct. 7).

    1995 - US rescues Mexico's economy with $20-billion aid program (Feb. 21).

    1996 - France agrees to end nuclear testing (Jan. 29).

    1997 - European Union plans to admit six nations (Dec. 13).

    1998 - Europeans agree on single currency, the euro (May 3).

    1999 - Nelson Mandela, first black president of South Africa, steps down (June 16), and Thabo Mbeki takes over.

    2000 - Presidents of North and South Korea sign peace accord, and at least symbolically, end a half-century of antagonism (June 13).

    2001 - In response to Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, U.S. and British forces launch bombing campaign on Taliban government and al-Qaeda terrorist camps in Afghanistan (Oct. 7). Bombings continue on a daily basis.

    2004 - North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) formally admits 7 new countries: Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia (March 29).

    2005 - About 11 million Iraqis (70% of the country's registered voters) turn out to select their first permanent Parliament since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein (Dec. 15).

    2006 - Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group, fires rockets into Israel. In response, Israel launches a major military attack, sending thousands of troops into Lebanon. (July 13–Aug. 15).

    2007 - Former Communist Countries Admitted into European Union (Jan. 1):  Romania and Bulgaria's entry expands the European Union to 27 nations and a population of about 490 million.

    2008 - NATO Invites Two Countries to Join Alliance (April 3): Leaders of NATO invite Croatia and Albania to become part of the alliance. Once admitted, NATO will include 28 countries. Greece vetoes the invitation to Macedonia, and despite lobbying by the U.S., Ukraine and Georgia are also denied membership.
