I need ideas of things our school could recycle for Earth Day...

we already recycle cans/bottles, paper, and phones... and I thought batteries would be too dangerous to recycle. What's something easy that we could do? Thanks!

  1. old glasses for poor people to wear.

  2. by recycling the milk cartons that schools use for lunch everyday could really help make a difference. think of all the people who drink milk at your school everyday, recycling those milk cartons is a great idea!!!

  3. How about those plastic bags from the crovery store? They are all over the place and the Chatham County dump sites don't seperate them out for recycling. I know that Food Lion in PBO has a recycle bin for them, so someone must be recycling that material.

  4. How about ink jet cartridges?  Lots of schools do that as a fundraiser.

What about plastic bags?  Some WalMarts recycle them.

How about crayons/markers/pencils?  Your group could sort out those that work and donate them to a daycare/preschool center.

  5. What about baby items?  Bottles, clothing, cloth diapers, and burp cloths?  I am sure school age children have baby siblings and the parents could contribute outgrown items.

I also thought if milk cartons are recyclable, try ice cream cartons.

Petsmart has a program to mail in cell phones and ink cartridges to help raise money for pet charities.  They provide pre-paid envelopes.

You could also recycle old ceramic plates.  The kids could wrap them in towels and use a rubber mallet to break them; then they could use them to make mosaic crafts in the art classroom.

Egg crates- art teachers often use them as paint "holders" for the kids.

I think Nike has a program where they recycle old tennis shoes.  Since kids outgrow shoes so quickly, it might be fun.

  6. You could put waste bucket size recycle containers in each class room to recycle all waste paper, or two, one for white paper and the other for all other recyclable paper.

It would be a great way to stretch out Earth Day and create new habits.

  7. Hold a nearly new sale for clothes/toys/equipment etc.

Do the children wear uniform? Hold a uniform sale or exchange day. (1 point per item given or received)

    Our school collects printer cartridges.

Do the children eat fruit etc. at snack time? Get a compost bin ( ask for donations!) and compost their waste.

  8. recycle clothes cus there are lots of poor people that need them

  9. how about going one step further REUSING rather than recycling eg use cloth bags instead of plastic - they're easy to make and personalise

drink tap water instead of bottled - saving plastic and resources to manufacture the bottles and transport them around

here in England you can save used stamps to buy guide dogs for the blind

  10. Maybe your school could pick up litter somewhere instead.

Your school could recycle glass and plastic.

The answer above is a good idea-milk cartons would be good.

  11. I hear ink cartriges are recyclable but I don't know where to take them. I have about a dozen and haven't bothered to find out where to take them yet. I think they can be submitted for cash for fundraisers but I know office supply stores like Office Depot or OfficeMax will take them as a trade-in on new ones. Batteries can be dropped off at Walgreens if you want to take up that effort.
