  1. For two points, we should write your Master's thesis?

Let me introduce you to Google.

  2. You are biting off a lot at one time..

To locate Felecite's relatives, you need to look in whatever records are valid for that time frame. It might be census records, but what you need for that is a specific time frame, and to identify the parish where she lived.  Last name is necessary.  Free people of color would be applicable PRIOR to 1865, and those would hopefully be found in the census. Slaves are not shown.

Land grants can be tricky.  If land was granted, it is often in the "parent" county/ parish.  Example.. a county does not exist in 1842, but there is a land grant.  In 1850, the county is divided to form a new county. RECORDS of the land grant would remain where it was issued (or maybe at state level), but sales after the new county, would fall in their records.

A good place for you would be www.usgenweb.com, which has volunteer sites for all counties (parishes) in the US. If you are coping with an AREA, then you would need to learn the history of adjoining boundaries.
