Question:

Negative and Positive 0?

The definition of a negative number is a number less than 0.

The definition of a positive number is a number is greater than 0.

I understand that there is some law that says 0 can't be negative or positive, but how is 8 + (-0) = 0. If it isn't legal, how is it still possible? And if it is possible, why is it not legal?

  1. It's not possible but it could be a problem in a math book.  They want to see if you try to give a -8 as an answer.

  2. You would never say 8 + (or -) zero, because it's an empty action.  I think if you see it here, ppl just put in the zero so you can follow the steps, like if you're adding equations and one of the variables cancels out, they put in the zero so you can see what is happening.

  3. Zero is not pos.nor neg.

When you say 8 + (-0) you mean to say 8 plus -1 times zero

    -1 times zero is just zero and 8 + 0 is 8

So -0 means -1 times zero = zero

And +0 means +1 times zero = zero

So +0 =-0 = 0 and zero is neither negative nor positive

    I hope you understand this.

    ANSWER
