Negative outside of square root?

Lets say a question asks for the square root of nine which is plus or minus three. However there is a negative sign outside of the square root. What does this mean?

    = - (+/- 3)

    coz sqrt 9 is +/- 3

    so it would b

    - (+3) or - (-3)

    which is -3 or +3

    Anyways the answer is same... but understand the difference...

    subtract (Plus or Minus 3)

    In this case, it has no effect.  

    You go from

    +3 or -3

    to

    -3 or +3

  3. "Square root" refers to just the positive number that when multiplied by itself results in a given square number, but if something is stated like "x^2 = 9", both -3 and 3 are correct, and the answer to "x^2 = number" is "+/- square root of the number", the square root being positive only.

    A negative sign outside of the square root means determining the positive number that is the square root and then making it negative, or the negative number that when multiplied by itself results in the square number.

    Negative square root of 9 is -3, the square root being +3.
