Question:

Negotiating paid time off and other benefits

I just received an offer for a job. The pay is fine. Actually, I have already how flexible the pay was, and it did not sound very flexible - or at least they seemed confident that they tried to be fair to me.

The main thing in terms of the pay/benefits package that I'm not satisfied with is the number of days off. Should I try to negotiate this? The companies that I worked for in the past offered 3-4 days more off (combining vacation, sick, personal days) per year. If so, how to negotiate?

I have worked in the past, but I do not work currently, so they know that they are not trying to woo me away from a job I am at with a better benefit package. Should I just say that places that I have worked in the past offered more days and I'd like comparable time off? The information that they sent is a printed paper that lists all the benefits for the employees.

The only other things are relatively high insurance permium and needing to wait a few months before being able to join 401k. I imagine insurance premiums are not negotiable. Start time for 401k either?

Thank you in advance for your advice!

  1. the iinsurance and 401k are not likely to be negotiable, but time off may be. If you have relevant experience and are not being hired inat the entry level, it is worth it to ask. if they want you they will at least consider it. The worst they can say is no. You will not look bad if you present this to them professionally.

  2. I doubt the time off is negotiable but you can always ask.
