Negotiations between New York Mets and R.A. Dickey continues - MLB Update
As the Baseball Winter Meetings are right around the corner, the New York Mets have an important decision to make about their Cy Young Award winner, R.A. Dickey.
Talks have entered into the final stage, as per the sources but both sides are still willing to modify their offers and counter offers in order to make sure negotiations do not fail.
Indeed, the issue of a contract renewal for Dickey will be on the top agenda for discussion by the officials that will participate in the Winter Meetings. A unanimous conclusion about the fate of Dickey will possibly be made as to whether he should be retained
or traded.
Dickey is aware of why talks are taking so long to produce something concrete.
He earlier admitted that the Mets have other options as well such as trading him and finding prospects in return.
He did not take offence of how General Manager, Sandy Alderson was thinking toward him, because he knew that he is performing his job in the best interest of the organisation.
Dickey realises that the business side of the story is as important for New York as his retention. If he is traded, it will not be shocking for him.
However, Dickey can take heart from the fact that over the last few days the Mets have stepped up and tried to clinch an agreement with him.
After committing David Wright to an eight-year deal worth $138 million, they have turned their attention toward Dickey.
Considering the age of Dickey, he will not be awarded more than a two-year deal. The issue that concerns Dickey right now the most is the value of the new contract.
He will be looking for something around $11-12 million per year, which of course is nearly unaffordable for New York.
Dickey will be drawing confidence for his contention of $12 million per year from the recent deal between the New York Yankees and 40-year old Andy Pettitte that ensured the ageing pitcher the same amount of money.
Certainly, the Mets will be aware of this as they progress ahead for finalising the new contract for Dickey.
Only time will tell as to how much Dickey gets per year in his new agreement.
