My neighbors cats keep getting in my trash cans that I keep outside. What can I use or do to keep them out of it? Willing to go to any lengths to do so.

  1. Do these cats ever go inside your neighbors house?  If so, ask if they can keep their cats in the house at night due to them digging in your garbage - they can always keep litter boxes indoors for the cats to go potty in at night.

If these cats are strictly outdoor cats, then buy them big outdoor trash cans that have a lid that latches shut & then they won't be able to get into it.

I wouldn't do anything drastic or mean, it's best to compromise & try to get along, than to have an ongoing fight w/ your neighbors.

  2. Regardless of our answers that resolve your issue. . . .you STILL need to politely talk to your neighbor.  They really SHOULD try to be more responsible.  Yelling at your neighbor WON'T resolve anything.  And the cat is just following its instincts.  CAN'T BLAME THE CAT, EITHER !

They DO make trash cans with "arm" handles that snap up over the lid when its on, thereby precluding an animal of any kind from being able to pry it off.  THEY'RE VERY EFFECTIVE!  It will eventually frustrate the animal enough to find SOMEONE ELSE'S trash to invade.

Knowing me, though, I'd ALSO leave some food out for it.  Obviously, it's hungry.  I feel sorry for animals.  You might bring the cat's hunger to its OWNERS attention. . . . . .TOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Cats don't have thumbs so put your trash in a container that has a secure lid.  Rubbermaid makes a good one called the Brute.  The lid is easy to snap into place just by pushing down on the handles on either side of the top.  If you don't secure your trash this way, you're also likely to get other critters such as dogs and raccoons strewing garbage around.

  4. I think like "Beans" pepper is good to get rid of cats, they hate it, and will normaly not go near it,

  5. Cats have to be pretty darn hungry to start getting into trash cans, and they aren't all that good at it. Are you sure it isn't raccoons or dogs who are opening the cans, and then the cats come along after? In any case, getting trash cans with secure lids should keep animals out of them. The kind of cans with handles are often secured with bungee cords, though raccoons have been known to figure that out. One thing many people do, myself among them, is to keep any meat or fish-smelling garbage in the freezer until garbage day. Makes your garbage much less attractive.

  6. well. the best way would be a gun. ha ha. but no i am not going to tell you to kill your neighbors cats. so go to a pet store and ask them, there could be something you could spray to make it so it's like "cat repellent"  or lots of pepper. ha they hate it.
