Neil Howard prepares Prime Cut for possible participation in Belmont Stakes
Prime Cut, the third place finisher in the Peter Pan Stakes, might race in the 143rd running of the Belmont Stakes.
He may not be a serious contestant for the $1 million purse, but Prime Cut might bring some fame to his and his owner’s name by racing in the Belmont Stakes.
He is trained by Neil Howard. Howard trains Prime Cut for Courtlandt Farms.
Howard is still to take a final decision regarding Prime Cut’s participation in the June 11 event. He said, “He's a possibility, we're still going to take another couple of days before we make a decision”.
Regardless of the decision, the bay colt, Prime Cut, practises for the race. At Churchill Down he completed five furlongs in 1 minute and 3 seconds.
Prime Cut was working with exercise rider, Dane Noel. Dane Noel made Prime Cut post fractions of about 13 seconds, 26 seconds before he was able to gallop the six furlongs in 1 minute and 16 seconds.
Prime Cut is trained by Neil Howard. Howard commented on Prime Cut’s performance “Everything went good, I was just looking to go just a nice five-eighths -- not too fast, not too slow. I thought he went well, finished good and galloped out strong. He's
been running -- he's just come off the Peter Pan (G2) -- so he's a pretty fit horse".
Howard also said that Prime Cut is scheduled to work half a mile next week as well. And if a decision to race him in the Belmont is affirmative, then he will leave for New York.
The colt just came off the Belmont Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes where he stood third to Alternation. Peter Pan Stakes took place on May 14, 2011. He was ridden by Edgar S. Prado.
His racing career also has him finishing runner up to Derby Kitten in the Grade 2 Coolmore Lexington that took place on April 23, 2011.
Prime Cut managed to score just one win, which came in an allowance race that took place on, March 26, 2011. He stood first after defeating Bind in Fair Grounds. He has won two of his starts and his earnings are $123,685.
The three year old was sired by Bernstein. He was bred by Stuart McPhee in Kentucky.
