Neil Robertson believes snooker will progress in Australia: 2012 Australian Goldfields Open
Last year the snooker governing body, World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) added a couple of new snooker tournaments in the calendar. The 2011 Australian Goldfields Open snooker tournament was one of the major ranking snooker events
which were added to the new season calendar. The WPBSA hoped that the tournament will receive a lot of support from the snooker fans in Australia.
The event was really a major step to introduce international level snooker in the country. As expected by the WPBSA, the 2011 Australian Goldfields Open snooker tournament had a huge response from the snooker lovers around the country and the world. They
came to watch their favourite potters at the Bendigo Stadium arena and cheered them with their utmost support.
After witnessing such a huge turnout at the end of the tournament, the association was quite satisfied. This year’s Australian Goldfields Open was also expected to bring about fireworks the same way it did last year. So far, the tournament has received positive
response from the fans as they are coming to the arena to watch their favourites.
The former World Snooker Championship winner from Australia, Neil Roberson is very happy to see this response of the people and believes that the game will grow in Australia.
In a recent interview with World Snooker, Robertson said, “Barry Hearn has said that Bendigo have done everything that they have been asked to do. Some of the players have to realise that when we were first going out to China we were actually playing for
less prize money than we are here. Since then the tournaments in China have doubled or tripled in prize money.”
He added, “So I think it will just take a little bit of time. Snooker is not the same in Australia as it is in China but it is still a very important market to put snooker on the map.”
Opening round clashes of the tournament are under way at the Bendigo Stadium. Robertson has claimed his first victory to book his place in the second round. It will interesting to see how far Robertson can carry his winning momentum in the tournament as
he is in good form.
