Neil Robertson wins the World Open
Neil Robertson won the World Open at Glasgow after beating Ronnie O’Sullivan 5-1 last night.
The current World Champion was the emphatic winner after O’Sullivan failed to find the form he has shown during the tournament.
Robertson took the first frame with O’Sullivan making a number of unforced errors. The three time World Champion looked as if he would take the second frame with a break of 43, but an in-off foul allowed the Australian back into the match. The new world
number one made the most of O’Sullivan’s misfortune and took the second frame.
O’Sullivan fought back to narrow the deficit to 2-1 with a good break of 72. The Englishman looked as if he would take the fourth frame, but he missed a pink that scattered the reds. Robertson took his chances and made a break of 59. This was enough for
the World Champion to go into a 3-1 lead at the interval.
O’Sullivan broke in the fifth frame and potted a red, but he was unlucky when the white ball cannoned in off two other reds. This gave Robertson another chance and again the world number one punished O’Sullivan with a break of 66. This put the Australian
into a commanding 4-1 lead.
Both players appeared nervous in the following frame and missed a number of chances to win. O’Sullivan fouled when he potted the white and yellow with two reds left on the table. The Australian seized this opportunity and cleared the reds and colours to
clinch the frame and the match.
This was Robertson’s sixth ranking tournament win and his run in the World Open has made him the world number one in the rankings. Despite, being ranked lower it was O’Sullivan who was the marginal favourite to win the trophy after his fine form in the contest
so far.
However, it was the current World Champion Robertson who showed the maturity and confidence needed to win. The player gave an assured display and put O’Sullivan under pressure. He took his chances when O’Sullivan made a mistake and punished the Englishman
each time he failed to make a pot.
After the match Robertson said, "Ronnie didn't play that well, but I still had to pot the balls that were in front of me. Being world champion has given me huge confidence, I go into finals knowing I can win under the most amount of pressure."
Speaking after the game, O’Sullivan told reporters, "He's world champion and world number one, and he dispatched me like world champions and number ones do."
