Neil Watson achieves Men’s 50m butterfly gold: Day seven - South African LC Nationals
Neil C Watson of CGA-CG achieved the crown of Men’s 50m butterfly on day seven of the South African Long Course Nationals at the KZN Aquatic-Kings Park Centre in Durban on Sunday, April 22.
The 23-year-old Watson demonstrated his gruelling efforts in the single lap butterfly event as he overpowered his challengers in a comfortable manner.
With his remarkable pace, he stayed prominently ahead of his challengers and hit the finishing wall for the title of the discipline with the timing of 24.31 seconds.
He was followed by Brett H Walsh of KZNA-KZ, who was 0.44 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and reached the medal rostrum for silver medal by clocking a time of 24.75 seconds.
The 18-year-old Walsh was trailed by Will Scheepers of NCASA-NC, who secured bronze medal of the discipline by producing a time of 24.78 seconds.
Similarly, fourth spot of the race was secured by Nico Meyer of NTS-NT, who was just 0.01 seconds behind and concluded his race in a time of 24.79 seconds. Meyer remained nearly 0.30 seconds ahead of Reynard Wessels of Fsa-FS, who clocked a time of 25.06
seconds for fifth position.
In the meantime, Vanessa Mohr occupied gold medal of the Women’s 50m butterfly. With her epic performance in the shortest butterfly discipline, Mohr stunned the aquatic crowd by winning gold medal of the discipline with the timing of 26.53 seconds.
She was traced by Marne Erasmus of BOR-BO, who proved her mettle for second best spot of the race by posting a time of 27.69 seconds.
The silver medallist was followed by Ashley-Cooper of WPA-WP, who remained 0.27 seconds behind and emerged on the finishing end for bronze medal with the timing of 27.96 seconds.
Fourth spot of the race was secured by Chris Zwiegers of NTS-NT and Terianne Brown of BOR-BO, who stayed nearly one second apart and hit the wall with the same timing of 28.75 seconds.
Furthermore, Mohr was overjoyed with her phenomenal effort in the butterfly discipline and stated that she will work hard to excel in the same discipline at the forthcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
