Neils Gormsen, Anders Thomsen clinch 49er Youth World Championship title at Travemünde, Germany
Denmark’s 493r team comprising of Neils Gormsen and Anders Thomsen grabbed the 49er Youth World Championship title with 34 points after a superb sail on the final day of the event at Travemünde in Germany. The Danish pair had a tough competition during the
very first edition of 49er Youth World Championship but they sailed brilliantly throughout the tournament to earn the glory.
While speaking to the local media after their victory, Gormsen said, “The 49er Youth Worlds in Travemünde was a great experience. It was combined with the Travemünde Woche which worked out well. The atmosphere at the Travemünde Woche is very unique, and
most of the competitors hang around in the evening which gave us a chance to get to know the sailors.”
He added, “We came into the regatta with high expectations of making a medal and we also knew that this would be the last year that we were young enough to participate, so we are very happy that we were able to win overall. All in all it was a great regatta.
It was great fun to race in a fleet without the old guys that usually beat us.”
The first episode of 49er Youth World Championship featured 37 teams in the 49er fleet which represented 14 countries from around the world. The weather conditions at Travemünde were ideal for a good sail on German waters.
Great Britain’s James Peters and Ed Fitzgerald secured second place overall with 45 points while the French team comprising of Vincent Berthez and Marc Mallaret finished third, just three points behind the Britons at 48 points.
