  1. 1918 - birth

    1943 - Joins the African National Congress (the ANC) marked his first real step of being serious about wanting change in South Africa

    1952 - Opens the first black legal firm in South Africa with fellow lawyer Oliver Tambo

    1960 - Sharpeville Massacre where Police kill 69 peaceful protestors and the ANC is banned. Mandela realises that peaceful resistance may not be enough and goes into hiding where he forms an underground military group with armed resistance called Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation or MK)

    1964 - June 12 -  Captured and convicted of sabotage and treason and sentenced to life imprisonment at the age of 46

    1990 -  February 11 - Nelson Mandela is released from prison after 27 years!!!

    1994 - April 26 - Free Elections where black South Africans are allowed to vote for the first time. Nelson Mandela runs for President.

    May - Inaugurated as the first black president of South Africa.
