Nemanja Vidic welcomes the return of Rio Ferdinand
Manchester United skipper Nemanja Vidic has hailed the return of defensive partner Rio Ferdinand and now feels the team is at full strength. Vidic is extremely happy with the return of the English skipper and is treating it as if it’s a big-name signing
at United.
Both Vidic and Ferdinand have formed a formidable partnership every time they both take the back line and have been the rocks behind United’s success over the past 4 years. It is therefore no coincidence that as soon as the partnership has re-formed, two
clean sheets have come through. Manchester United have had a troubled campaign in terms of defence this season as they threw away two in-the-bag victories against Fulham and Everton, which has cost them dearly in terms of premier league position. At Fulham,
United were 2-1 up in the final 5 minutes of the match, but owing to lack of concentration, threw away the lead to manage just a draw. Misery continued at Everton when a 3-1 lead was thrown away in injury time as Everton managed to score two goals in a matter
of one minute.
Yet, with the return of Ferdinand, the side has already managed two clean sheets and would be delighted to have it intact ahead of today’s important clash against West Bromwich Albion. Ferdinand couldn’t feature in the first 8 fixtures for the side owing
to a knee concern which also ruled him out of this summer’s FIFA World Cup in South Africa and Vidic was delighted to have the English skipper back in the ranks.
"Rio played against Valencia and Sunderland and looked fit and I watched England's game against Montenegro, when he also looked very sharp. I am glad he is fit and I hope he doesn't have any more injuries because over the last couple of years they have caused
him so many problems,” claimed the United skipper. Vidic added that if Ferdinand is able to feature for most of the season, it would be a major boost and would be like a big name signing.
The club captain was unconcerned by the current league position of the club, as for the first time in nearly two decades, arch-rivals Manchester City are above the Red Devils. United are currently on the third spot, 5 points shy of Chelsea, but Vidic refused
to see this as a reason for panic.
"It is the beginning of the season and we have lost a few points, I accept that. If you look at the last year, we lost a lot of points but Chelsea won the title and they lost some as well. It will be the same this year because, if anything, the competition
is even better than it was before. This is the time of year when we traditionally start doing better. I hope this season will be the same,” claimed the Serbian Centre back.
Manchester United have a tradition of kicking things off after the winter break and start their famous winning streak which has led them to so many premier league titles over the years. With the manager now having a fully fit squad under his belt, a right
mix of players would be needed in order to improve their record on the away fixtures. Having already drawn 4 out of 7 fixtures so far in the premier league, the side would want to step up their game and win more premier league fixtures in order to register
their wins.
