Neovascularization v. Angiogenesis?

Anybody know what the difference between neovascularization and angiogenesis is? Thanks for your help!

  1. Neovascularization is the formation of new blood vessels basically from scratch. Angiogenesis is when the blood vessels sprout from pre-existing blood vessels.


  2. There is some degree of overlap b/wn the two; I suppose that neovascularization implies that there is some sort of underlying "regrowth," whereas angiogenesis is a more generic term.

    In the context of an endovascular stent, I prefer to use the term neovascularization as I feel it is more precise.

    I would check the definition in Stedman's for a more precise answer.
