  1. you

    your mother

    your father

your mother's parents are your maternal grandparents, their other children are your aunts & uncles, their children are your cousins, their children are your 2nd cousins and their children are your 3rd cousins

your father's parents are your paternal grandparents and the lineage is the same as your mother's after that.

if you have sisters/brothers then their children are your neices/nephews

if you have a child or children and your sibling (s) have a child or children then the kids are cousins

your grandparents (mom/dad's side) are your great grandparents, and you add a great for every set of grandparents that goes back...I have traced my family tree back to my 11th great grandparents on my mother's side...

  2. Aunt = your mom or dad's sister

Uncle = your mom or dad's brother

    Great-Aunt = your grandma or grandpa's sister

    Great-Uncle = your grandma or grandpa's brother

Nephew = your brother or sister's son

Niece = your brother or sister's daughter

1st Cousin = The child of your Aunt or Uncle

1st Cousin once removed = the child of your 1st cousin

1st Cousin twice removed = the grandchild of your 1st cousin

1st Cousin three times removed = the great-grandchild of your 1st cousin

2nd Cousin = Your children, and the children of your 1st cousins, are 2nd cousins to each other

3rd Cousin = The children of 2nd cousins are 3rd cousins to each other

2nd Cousin once removed = the child of your 2nd cousin

2nd Cousin twice removed = the grandchild of your 2nd cousin

  3. Your parents' brothers and sisters are your uncles and aunts.  You are their niece or nephew.

The children of your uncles and aunts are your first cousins, and they are your parents' nieces and nephews.

The children of your first cousins are your first cousins once removed.  Your children and the children of your first cousins are second cousins to each other.

The grandchildren of your first cousins are your first cousins twice removed.  They are your children's second cousins once removed, and your grandchildren's third cousins.

    And so on.

  4. Your aunt is either the sister of one of your parents, or your parent's brother's wife.  (The first would be a blood relative, the second not - hopefully.)  Your uncle would be the same, but male.

The child of your aunt or uncle is your cousin.

You are the nephew of your aunt or uncle.  The female equivalent is neice.  If your brother or sister has a child, he/she is your nephew/neice.

I think that a second cousin is your grandparent's brother/sister's grandchild.  So, if a pair of first cousins each have children, the children are second cousins.

I don't get the once removed/twice removed bit.  If someone could explain that to me, I'd appreciate it as well.
