Nephew failed middle school class for the year. What to tell him?

My nephew failed his class. He's in his early teens. I see him once in a while but usually we don't really talk deeply about subjects. He's not very communicative. He's a smart kid, reads a lot, not challenged intellectually, but it's a matter of not being interested or not knowing how to study.

What approach should I take in talking to him?

well  make him go to summer school and if he passes he dont have to fail
