their owners and are able to spend millions on acquiring some of the best players in Europe.
Nerlinger is hopeful that the Financial Fair Play regulations will be implemented by UEFA in the near future so that heavy spending from clubs can be put to a halt. He insisted that the clubs should spend what they earn and admitted
that the owners should not be allowed to spend outside the club’s finances.
The chief stressed that the step would finish the dependency of clubs on one person and would definitely save the game.
“I hope that the Financial Fair Play comes and plays an important role in the future. I think it’s very dangerous that big clubs are dependent on one person that provides them with the money and that’s why Financial Fair Play must
play an important role in international football. It’s the easiest economic rule: Don’t spend more than you earn,” he was quoted as saying in an interview to
Ten Action.
The former Bayern Munich player added that Manchester City and Chelsea have heavy debts and are incurring losses at the end of the year but still they spend millions in the transfer market. He stated that UEFA should be looking
into this matter as it is dangerous for the future of football.
“If you had a balance sheet which shows €125 million in debts, then something is going in the wrong direction. I think then it is absolutely necessary to change things,” the Sporting Director concluded.
