Nerves still haunt struggling Tseng
Current world number one Yani Tseng is unfazed by the way things are going in her pro career, but the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) phenom has to admit that her nerves still
pose the biggest challenge to her game.
At the end of the 2012 LPGA season, Tseng finds herself in the most difficult situation as her victory journey has virtually halted. But the key question is whether her nerves are to blame
for when it comes to analysing her performance slump.
Tseng may shrug off her nerve dilemma, but her archrival, Stacy Lewis, seems to agree with the idea that the current world number one golfer has to focus more on boosting her mental strength,
rather than her playing style or putting.
The LPGA Tour recently caught up with Lewis and asked what has been the biggest motivating factor in her career so far. Lewis, who is more than happy after outrivaling Tseng on the Rolex Player
of the Year list, said that her biggest aim has been to beat the top-ranked prodigy.
Although Lewis-Tseng rivalry is not limited to stats and accolades as it often turns into a competition between the United States and Asia, the American golfer claims that she still draws
plenty of inspiration from the world number one and is not thrilled to see her game in bad shape.
“But the way Yani plays, she kind of goes for everything. And when she goes a little sideways, she can go sideways pretty quickly and her confidence can go,” Lewis pointed out what has been
keeping Tseng down in most of the recent LPGA tournaments.
Coming off a successful 2011 season that saw her notch up seven titles, Tseng continued her winning form at the start of the 2012 season. She won three titles early in year, but lost her momentum
in the second half of the season.
Lewis said she saw an opportunity and went for it. “As a competitor going against her, when you see that, you kind of want to jump on that”.
Tseng, who has arguably eclipsed most of the big names in women’s golf and her popularity still seems unhurt, has been able to put together a stunning profile since she joined professional
golf in 2007.
