  1. Don't be afraid.  Your eye doctor will make sure that things don't hurt you or your eyes -- if -- you stick by what they say.  The most important thing you can do is really listen to the instructions you're given during the appointment.  Some of my patients bring a little notebook to make sure they don't miss anything.  We do give people a booklet explaining the care for their lenses and eyes, but again - taking notes helps people remember.

When the contact lens sits in your eye, it is larger than the cornea and the edge sits on the white part, or sclera.  This part has no real nerve endings, and can not feel anything - so, with soft contact lenses the comfort is amazing.

It is a bit freaky to have something in your eye for sure, but the vision will be dramatically different.  Make sure you do not wear eye makeup to the appointment, as this can cause problems with fitting.  If mascara or eye shadow falls under the lens while inserting, it can rub against the cornea and feel terrible.  So ... my advice - no make up until after the appointment!

    Good luck!

  2. you will be fine. i am 13 too. and i got contacts this year. it will take a while to put them in the first couple days...... and i couldn't take them out myself for a few days either. but i promise that it gets easier. like, within a week, you'll be perfectly comfortable w/ it. just remember to hold your eye open so you can't blink.

  3. I was really scared too, but now I'm totally comfortable with putting them in,wearing them, and changing them.

The doctor will guide you through your first time putting them in and taking them out.  The biggest trick is not to look directly at them, but rather through the mirror, and place them below your pupil, and then closing your eye.  They will slide over your pupil on their own.  It'll feel a little weird at first, but you'll get used to it pretty quick.  Always make sure your hands are clean whenever you touch your contacts and while putting them in, removing them, or anytime you touch your eye.

You'll be just fine, and you'll love the freedom of not having to wear glasses!!!  Good luck!!

  4. the hardest part about getting your first contacts is putting them in your eyes,we are always taught not to put anything in our eyes.it takes practice, and alot of red eyes,it took me about 2 weeks to finally get use to putting them in.you will be find.

  5. I had that same problem. It will bother you for a little bit but if you use make-up close to your eye you should be fine. After a while you will feel like you dont have them in! Good luck! Remember not to fall a sleep in them.

  6. I was nervous when I first got my contacts too. If your eyes keep blinking naturally when you are trying to put your contacts in do not try to hold them open with your two hands. What you should do is just put the contact on either your index or middle finger and make sure you can see the side of the contact that is curved in not out. Put solution on your finger and on the contact. Then just look straight ahead into a mirror and put the contact in your eye. Contacts give you a lot of freedom from glasses and there is nothing to be nervous about. Just make sure that you are responsible and do not fall asleep with your contacts in your eyes. Good Luck!
