I am a college freshman, and im not a big guy at all. Recently i joined the rugby club at my college, although practice was wicked fun and im excited to begin the season. I'm really nervous about playing in my first game. I know im gonna get hit, but it looks like its gonna be real bad, and i was just wondering what to expect.

  1. Its a team game.. Your back will protect you.

    lmfao.

  2. you get hit but you won't die.

  3. The absolute #1 piece of advice I have ever been given or gave to any player I coach is to do EVERYTHING that you do on the field to 100% of your ability.  It sounds cliche but let me explain it.

No matter what you do, even if you have absolutely no idea whatsoever what you are supposed to be doing, do it at 100% speed.  If you are going into a ruck to ruck over... 100%.  If you are running with the ball....100%.  If you are going in to make a tackle....100%.  Never EVER second guess yourself and go into any situation on a rugby field at 99% or less. Thats when you get hurt or cause team mates to get hurt.

The biggest thing you can do in practice is learn technique.  Tackling, scrummaging, straight arms, kicking, anything.  Its all about technique.  Once you have that, if you go into any situation with 100% effort and good technique, not only will you probably dominate that particular engagement, you'll be less likely to get hurt.

Think about it, if you go in to tackle someone at 99% intensity and they hit you at 100%, all other things being equal, who is likely to win there?

As a coach, I can definately tell you that I would rather have a player doing the wrong things at 100%, than a player doing the right things at 50%.  We can teach you to do the right things, thats our job, but only you can control how you do those things.

Would you rather have the coach yell at you for doing the wrong thing or sit on the bench because you aren't doing anything?

  4. expect to get hit every time you get the ball unless you are so good that you can miss all the tackles. and since this is your first time. don't be afraid to go into a tackle. you won't get hurt. I was afraid my first time, but as I gained expierience, I found out that tackling isn't so bad. next it depends what positions you are. If you are a forward expect to tackle alot and to be in alot of scrums and line outs. you will also do alot of the defending  and rucking and mauling. If you are a back, expect to run faster than everybody else. and expect to play really rough.  I think I covered most of it.  -Have fun

  5. Get hit get up. Thats rugby. You dont mention which position you will be playing.
