Band camp starts tomorrow and I'm so nervous!! I don't really know why.... I'm worried about reading the drills since I don't know how yet, and being with the guy i like... And I'm sort of shy to begin with. I'm not used to doing everything 'in line' either. like standing still with your head up when the band director says " attend hut" or w/e... i'm afraid i'm afraid i'm going to get yelled at or something... please help =(

  1. I was very shy in high school, but at 28, band camp is one of my all-time favorite memories.

Our band director was very tough on us, but we got Best in State.

It just takes practice to get a piece to fall together.

Don't take getting yelled at personally. He'll most likely be barking at the entire group.

    "Clarinets!! Guide! Guide!"

It is AMAZING toward the end of camp, when your formation comes together.

You get a little thrill when everybody is doing it right.

Right now, these are the best days of your life. You don't know it yet, but you will!

    I miss those days!

    Good luck!

  2. don't worry! you aren't the only rookie that is nervous! everyone will be nervous for the first time!! it is a perfectly normal emotion to feel.

my first time i was sooo nervous. i wanted to do everyhting just right and etc. but it's sooo easy once you get the hang of it.

as for reading drill, it's just like a graph! and plus, the upperclassmen are there to help you, so please do ask your section leaders for help. and don't worry about forgetting drill, because you will practice the same move probably 20 times!

if the band director yells at you, it's only to help you. and besides, i doubt you will be singled out. he'll probably call out a group, not just one individual.

just look at everyone else, and do what they do. if you get lost, just look at someone near you for guidance.

please drink plenty of water so that you don't like, get over heated or anything like that! and don't worry, you'll be perfectly fine, i swear!!

    goodluck & happy marching!

  3. Dont be nervous ... sure the upper classmen might give you a hard time but dont take it to heart... just listen to the D.M.'s and everything should go great.

practice an MEMORIZE your music as soon as you can even if you dont have to....

Feet Together, Shoulders Back, Chin Up, Eyes Front...........

    and just have fun

  4. don't spaz! eveybody expects the rookies to s***w up & struggle a bit at first. do the best you can, push yourself hard to learn the skills, & HAVE FUN!!!

  5. AWWW those were the good old days... Don't be nervous Its fun. the band is like your family and believe me the 4 years go by really fast. the last marching band competition I could not stop crying. Enjoy it while you can because you really will miss it when you graduate

  6. aaahh Marching Band is friggin amazing!!

There will be others who don't know what they are doing.

The directors will probably be tough, like mine are, but they are really cool, friendly people most of the time and are just doing their job. You don't have to be freaked out by them. Just remember they are trying to make you better.

About the being shy thing... even though you may not want to do things like yell, remember that the yelling itself will not call attention to yourself, but not doing what you're supposed to will.

    good luck!! :)

  7. It's understandable that you would be afraid, especially being with the boy you currently have a crush on...

There will be upperclassmen that are hard on you, and others are understandable. the ones that are difficult are just trying to get you up to par with the rest of them band so the real learning can begin. Listen to what you are told, and memorize your music asap! Even if it's way more than everyone else...if you know your music well, the marching will come much easier.

Most importantly: remember: only good things come from band camp: a hot sock tan, new best friends that you will have for a lifetime, and the greatest time of your life. Embrace it!

  8. ur obviously new, so they'll take it easier on you. Section leaders or drum majors will help you learn how to, and hopefully they're nice. Good luck!
