Nesta Carter and Dayron Robles dominate the International Meeting Citta di Padova – Athletics news
As the International Meeting Citta di Padova concluded on Sunday, July 17, Nesta Carter from Jamaica and Dayron Robles from Cuba dominated proceedings with their scintillating performances in the event.
Carter, the 25-year-old sprinter, who stopped the clock in 10.10 seconds for earning a 100m victory, experienced an undeterred race in Padua, Italy. The win claimed by him at the 25th edition of the tournament not only ended in putting him at
the top of the podium, but also culminated in breaking the nine-year old track record set by US sprinter, Coby Miller. His win at the Italian city marked a moment to celebrate for Jamaican spectators, as Michael Frater clocked 10.31 seconds and Jacques Harvey
finished in 10.35 seconds to hand the country with a podium sweep.
Carter, who is currently looking forward to improve his Personal Best time and also aiming to emerge at the Monaco event this Friday, said, “I felt very well and I tried to execute my race. I want to improve my 9.78 PB this year.”
The young Jamaican, who specialises in 100m sprints, after clocking 9.8 seconds in August last year, had become the fifth runner to mark a sub-ten seconds finish in the discipline. Diversified as his other counterparts from around the world, he has been
successfully representing Jamaica in the 4 x 400m relays where amid his contribution, his team set a world and Olympic record at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. In the same discipline, his team marked a second finish on the podium at the 2007 World Championships.
In Padua, another athlete to claim the limelight was Cuban hurdler, Dayron Robles, who bagged his third successive win for stopping the clock in a 110m hurdle challenge in 13.26 seconds. Robles, the 24-year-old Olympic hurdling champion for the distance
he specialises in, had kicked-off his international athletics career back in 2005. The world remained oblivious of his existence unless his massive wins in 2006 and 2007.
Robles, who is looking forward to have some real challenges ahead, was not happy over his easy success in Padua. Perhaps this was the reason that while reflecting upon his thoughts after the contest, he said, “It was a normal race. It was not too bad but
I am not entirely happy.”
For emerging at this year’s Italian event, Robles, the pre-favourite for the run had to face a fierce challenge posed by America’s Tyrone Akins, whom he edged out by a time 0.04 seconds. The stellar performer from Cuba, who has been unbeaten this season,
extended his winning streak to 12 successes with the victory. He is now planning to join the field with his American counterpart, David Oliver, in Stockholm.
