Nesta Carter takes on Tyson g*y in 100m in Zagreb
A 100m race between Tyson g*y of the United States and Nesta Carter of Jamaica will highlight the 60th Hanzekovic Memorial in Zagreb, Croatia this Wednesday.
Tyson g*y set a season best time of 9.78 in London on 8 August, and Carter tied it at the World Challenge in Reiti last Sunday. The two will race head-to-head in the final IAAF World Challenge meeting of the season.
Carter is a young runner looking to establish himself as one of the world’s best while g*y has already established himself as one of the best. g*y is the current United States record holder, and clinched the Diamond Trophy last week by winning the final meet of the season in Brussels with a time of 9.79.
The 100m race in Croatia will not feature current world record holder, Usain Bolt of Jamaica, or Asafa Powell, also of Jamaica. Still, g*y will look to take Bolt’s title of world’s fastest man.
“I think it’s possible to run faster if the conditions are right,” said g*y.
While g*y has yet to win an Olympic medal, Carter has one from the 2008 Beijing Olympics when he won gold as part of the Jamaican 4x100m relay team. During the Diamond League season Carter has continually improved his own personal best. His personal best time before the season was 9.91, in Nottwil, Switzerland he ran a 9.86, and then he ran a 9.85 in Brussels. g*y’s personal best is 9.69 while the current world record is 9.58.
While the athletics world will watch to see if g*y can set a new world record, and if Carter can continue to improve, the people of Croatia will be looking for home grown Blanka Vlasic to impress in the high jump.
Vlasic won silver at the Beijing Olympics, and a number of gold medals in various world and European championships. This year she also took the Diamond Trophy in the High Jump after winning each of the seven Diamond League events.
Vlasic has the second highest jump of all time of 2.08 metres, which she accomplished in Zagreb last year. The world record for women’s high jump is 2.09 metres, set by Stefka Kostadinove of Bulgaria in 1987. Wednesday she returns to the site of her impressive 2.08 jump looking set a new world record in front of her countrymen.
Winner of the Diamond Trophy in the shot put, Christian Cantwell of the United States, will compete in Zagreb as part of a strong field. Most of the top shot putters will attend the event to try and claim Cantwell’s title from last year. Last year in Zagreb Cantwell launched the longest put of the season when he hit a distance of 22.16 metres.
Taking on Cantwell will be his fellow countrymen Reese Hoffa and Cory Martin, both of which have hit distances over 22 metres this season. While Cantwell was able to win the Diamond Trophy by winning the first five events of the season, Hoffa took first in the final two events including last week’s meet in Brussels.
