Seeded first in the draw, Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic grabbed their second title in Basel together, as they defeated Treat Conrad Huey and Dominic Inglot 7-5, 6-7(4), 10-5 in the final of Swiss Indoors.
The Canadian-Serbian duo needed one hour and 35 minutes to beat their rivals in a tough contest.
Nestor/Zimonjic and Huey/Inglot made a stable start, as they won their serve in the first five games of the contest, taking the score to 3-2 in favour of the former. The Canadian-Serbian combination struck in the sixth to go up
4-2 but they lost the following two, bringing back the score at par. However, the Filipino-British tandem failed to hold their serve in the 12th game and went down 5-7.
Both teams put on a flawless display on their serve in the second set, as none of them dropped it till the end, levelling the score at 6-6 and taking it to a tie-breaker. Nestor/Zimonjic and Huey/Inglot went neck to neck in the
first four points to take the score to 2-2 but then the Filipino-British pair grabbed five of the following seven points to triumph 7-6(4).
After the match score getting tied at one set apiece, it was taken to a super tie-breaker. Nestor and Zimonjic made the perfect beginning, bagging opening three points to go up 3-0. Huey and Inglot kept chasing the Canadian-Serbian
pair but they could not catch them till the end, losing it 5-10.
Nestor and Zimonjic used to be regular doubles partners before but they were now playing for the first time since winning the 2010 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
Sharing his thoughts after the match, Nestor said, "Playing with Nenad is always fun, we’ve had a lot of success together. He is one of the best on tour. It is always nice being on the same side as him. He played great, hitting
a lot of big serves when we needed them. We both played well when we need to. It was a very close match and it was the difference of one or two points."
Zimonjic was featuring in his fourth consecutive Basel final, winning on three occasions. He stated, "You always like the tournaments where you play your best. I was very lucky to be in four finals, winning three here. It is one
of the nicest indoor tournaments we have.”
Huey and Inglot were bidding for their second tour level title of the season but dropped to a 1-2 record in the finals.
