Netherlands beat Macedonia in preliminary round: Day eight – European Water Polo Championships
Netherlands’ senior national team beat Macedonia in their fifth Men’s water polo preliminary match of Group ‘A’ on eighth day of the continued 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven on Monday, January 23 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
Netherlands faced strong resistance from Macedonian squad in the four-quarter game, but they managed to prove their supremacy by a margin of two goals. Netherlands defeated Macedonia with a 10-8 struggle in the 32-mintue game.
The European championships are of significant importance as they provide a platform to all international teams to compete with each other and overcome their weaknesses before the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
The Macedonian squad served notice of their talent by overpowering Netherlands in the first quarter. They accomplished four goals in the first round while Netherlands’s players managed to score just two goals and the round ended with a 2-4 effort, Macedonia being in a lead of two.
In the second round, Netherlanders geared up their efforts and smothered all struggles of their opposing team. They stroke two goals in the second round while Macedonia failed to accomplish any goal and the score remained 4-4 after the first half.
The third quarter saw notable struggles from both teams, where Netherlands notched up three goals and managed to outperform their rival team, which achieved two goals only, making the score 7-6 after the third round.
The same continued in the final round, where Macedonian squad yet again accomplished two goals but failed to bring any harm to their opposing squad. In contrast, Netherlands extended their lead to two goals and ensured their win by marking three goals in the final round.
Willem Wouter Gerritse of Netherlands was declared player of the match as he contributed three goals and played a vital role in his team’s victory.
The arena enjoyed stupendous efforts of both team players while Netherlanders celebrated their win after the completion of session. In addition, Macedonia is now scheduled to compete with Romania in first quarterfinal of the tournament on Wednesday, January 25.
Furthermore, the session ended after the completion of all scheduled match while the tournament will conclude on January 29.
