Netherlands defeat Turkey in preliminary round, Group A: Day six – European Water Polo Championships
Netherlands defeated Turkey in their fourth Men’s water polo qualifying match of Group ‘A’ on sixth day of the ongoing 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Saturday, January 21 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The Turkish squad tried hard to ascend on the points table but they failed to overcome gruelling efforts of their opposing team, which grabbed the victory by a margin of five goals. Netherlands enjoyed a comfortable win over Turkey with a score of 12-7 in
the four-quarter game.
Both teams demonstrated their stupendous efforts in the first quarter, but Netherlands managed to gain a lead of one goal. The Turkish squad achieved two goals in the first round, but their effort was cut short by Netherlanders, who notched up three goals
and the score remained 3-2 after the round.
The second quarter saw unrelenting efforts of Netherlanders, who overwhelmed their opposing team by obtaining six goals. On the other hand, Turkish team was able to add three goals to their scorecard and the score went up to 9-5 after the first half.
The arena witnessed a notable effort of Turkish team, which tried to surpass Netherlands in the third quarter. Netherlanders scored two goals in the third round, but their effort was levelled by Turkish team that also notched up two goals. Turkey managed
to even the score of third round, but seemed helpless as they needed to score four additional goals in order to even the overall score. The score remained 11-7 at the end of third round.
Subsequently, Netherlands managed to prove its supremacy in round four, where they blocked all goal attempts of their opponent team and extended their lead to five goals by scoring one goal.
Willem Wouter Gerritse of Netherlands scored four goals and was announced player of the match for playing a vital part in his team’s victory. After winning their first match of the championships, Netherlands’ squad has jumped to fifth place on the overall
rankings list.
In addition, they are scheduled to compete with Macedonia in their fifth match of the tournament on Monday, January 23.
