Netherlands grabs success in the pool-play of Beach Volleyball World Cup – Volleyball News
Men’s teams from Netherlands caught a very good start to the 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup, which got the green light on Thursday, June 28 in Moscow, Russia.
The tournament started off with the pool-play matches. Round 1 of the pool-play brought duos from Netherlands and Australia in competition.
Netherlands’ Boersma E.-Spijkers collided with Boehm-Kapa from Australia in the first fixture of the day. The two teams contested their skills and struggled to grab the first win in the tournament. The match continued for almost 35 minutes and both teams
showcased their skills on the sand. Dutch pair proved to be better in the opening stanza and managed to post 21-14 on board. With first-set win, Boersma E.-Spijkers went on front and earned a better position in the match.
However, the Australians retaliated in the following set and hit back aggressively. They threw everything in attack and tried to cover the deficit. The Dutch tandem faced a lot of resistance from the opposite side, but still led the score on account of good
attacks and solid blocks. The Aussies used many different tactics, but eventually suffered the loss. Dutch team closed the second set by sending 21-18 on board and announced match victory.
The second match brought two different teams from the Netherlands and Australia. The pairing of Brouwer and Meeuwsen represented Netherlands, while McHugh and Slack played for Australia in the second match.
McHugh and Slack entered the court with revenge on their mind, which could easily be judged by their body language. Unlike the other Australian pair, they had a better chemistry between them. Opening set of the match featured a lot of thrilling moments and
the scoreboard showed constant variation. After many ups and downs, Dutch duo came on top with a small margin of two points (26-24).
Nonetheless, the Aussies successfully broke the rhythm of opponents and controlled the operations in second set. They took a sweet revenge and held off Dutch opponents for 21-17 win in the second set. They also dominated the third frame and claimed success
with a fair margin of seven points (15-8). McHugh and Slack captured two sets in the match and settled for 2-1 victory.
According to the set formula of the competition, a golden set was forced upon two sides, in order to determine the winner of the competition.
Netherlands’ Boersma E.-Spijkers and Australia’s McHugh-Slack played the golden set. The scoring remained tight in the 15-point golden, but Dutch pair earned three-point advantage to down the Aussies. They posted 15-12 on board and led Netherland to success
on day-1 of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup.
