Netherlands lifts 2011 Rabo FIH Women’s Champions Trophy Title (Second Half Analysis)
Maartje Paumen scored a hat-trick, as the Netherlands powered a 6-5 win over Argentina in finals and lifted the sixth title of the FIH Champions Trophy being held in Dutch city of Amsterdam on July 03, 2011.
In the previous part, we discussed the first half of the finals in which Argentina scored three goals while holding Dutch side only for a single goal. Argentina and Netherlands resumed the play in quite a professional way. However, the host side succeeded
to dominate the game with ball possession and fine stick work. Captain of Dutch side, Maartje Paumen, was at her best, who not only brought her team back into the game, but played vital role in the title-victory.
The host team accomplished back-to-back attacks against Las Leonas in order to make a comeback into the game. With seven minutes into the second period, the Dutch squad earned another short-corner and once again tested the skipper, Paumen. Once again the
captain proved her worth and made further reduction into the Las Leonas scoring.
In a matter of seven minutes, Paumen did what spread joys on face of every Dutch national whether sitting in the ground or in front of the TV screen. She converted her and team’s third short-corner in the 48th minute of the match and tied the
knots at 3-3. The defenders from Argentina failed to deliver their best and conceded the equalising goal that put them under intense pressure.
Following the tie-up, the two teams started fast and furious style of play in order to get the go-ahead goal. However, neither Argentina nor Netherlands succeeded to do so in the remaining regular period. The 70-minute action concluded with both squads at
3-3.
Argentina and Netherlands entered into the sudden-death overtime to make the game decisive, but two halves of 15 minutes were not adequate period in this regard. The game entered into the penalty-shootout round where Argentineans were unimpressive.
Agustina Soledad Garcia scored the first goal for Argentina in the penalty-shootout round which was answered from Willemijn Bos in the very next minute. Las Leonas missed the chance in the second attempt in the hands of Carla Rebecchi. However, Eva de Goede
of Netherlands did not miss the chance and took lead. Luciana Aymar also failed to avail the chance while Maartje Paumen expanded the lead up to two goals, 3-1.
Delfina Merino succeeded to score the goal while Carlijn Dirkse of Netherland failed to do so. All the h**l broke out, when Daniela Sruoga’s shot was saved and the Netherland won the game by 6-5.
