Gary http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wilson-c98046’s century well supported by disciplined bowling from Andrew White and Kevin O’Brien bagged Ireland a 70-run victory over Netherlands. It was the first ODI Netherlands played in Ireland’s ODI Series played at Clontarf Cricket Club Ground, Dublin on 16th August. Chasing Ireland’s competitive 50-overs total of 275 for 6, the visitors were bundled out for 205 runs with 29 balls to spare.
Gary Wilson’s 113 off 147 helped Ireland set a respectable total of 275 runs for six in their allotted 50 overs. Maurits Jonkman and Pieter Seelaar shared two wickets apiece. In reply, Tom http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Cooper-c51561 blazed with the bat on the day when most of his teammates were off-colour. With the wickets clattering at the other end, Cooper’s half-century was not enough to avoid a 70-run defeat. The disciplined bowling attack of Ireland did not allow the visiting batting line-up to break free, with Tom Cooper being the only exception. Netherlands was rolled over for 205 on the first ball of the 46th over.
The visitors after winning the toss opted to bat first. Though Ireland’s innings started with a boundary off a leg bye, the openers Gary Wilson and Paul Stirling started the innings in a defensive fashion pinching singles and doubles. The first six overs of the innings earned Ireland only 15 runs including the single boundary that came through the leg bye.
Stirling opened up in the seventh over looting Mudassar Bukhari for two consecutive boundaries. Both the openers set a strong foundation of 82 runs from 20 overs. On the last ball of 20th over Paul Stirling squandered his wicket needlessly taking a second run and being run out off Bradley Kruger’s throw. Stirling scored 40 runs off 55 balls plundering four boundaries.
Stirling’s departure brought Alex Cusack to the crease and in partnership with Gary Wilson, the pair shared a patient but confident partnership of 100 plus runs with the bulk coming from Stirling’s opening partner Gary Wilson. Netherlands’ attack was mauled from both ends. Wilson brought up his fifty in Peter Borren’s over with a cut shot through the off side for two. Wilson’s 97-ball half-century included only 2 boundaries. The partnership was worth 118 when Seelaar broke it having Cusack caught by Tom Cooper at long-off. Cusack scored 45 runs off 56 balls including three fours.
Opener Wilson and Kevin O’Brien posted 31 runs for the third wicket partnership before the fluent opener was caught by Kruger off Seelaar. Wilson misjudged a drive and Bradley Kruger coming in from long-on took a brilliant catch sliding forward. Gary Wilson played a fine knock of 113 runs from 147 balls. During 160 minutes stay at crease, Wilson entertained the home crowd with 10 powerful boundaries. The next three wickets earned the hosts 44 runs from five overs as the side finished its 50 overs quota with a total of 275 for 6.
Netherlands’ run chase got off to a bad start with openers Tom Heggelman and Eric Szwarczynski departed for 2 and 10 apiece with not many on the board. Tom Cooper tried to take the visitors out of a deteriorating situation but with the rest of batting line capitulating to the Irish attack, his half century was not enough to keep Netherlands in the game.
Six of the Dutch batters were sent back to the pavilion without entering into double figures. The highest partnership of Netherlands innings was worth 44, which was shared between Cooper and the wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wesley-Barresi-c96487 with the bulk coming from Cooper. Andrew White took 4 wickets conceding 44 runs in his quota of 10 overs. Kevin O’Brien took 3 wickets while Alberts van der Merwe took 2 for 31.
