Netherlands upset Great Britain in preliminary round: Day seven – European Water Polo Championships
Netherlands’ team upset Great Britain in their third Women’s water polo qualifying match of Group ‘A’ on day seven of the ongoing 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven on Sunday, January 22 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
Netherlands’s squad met the expectations of their fans by winning first game of the tournament with a difference of six goals. They defeated British team with a 12-6 struggle in the four-quarter game.
The first quarter of the game saw British team dominating the scorecard by a lead of one goal. The British squad accomplished two goals while their effort was trailed by a lone goal effort from Netherlands and the score remained 1-2 after the first round.
The tables turned in the second round, where Netherlands secured five goals to augment their points on the scorecard. In contrast, British team was able to add three goals to their points tally, suffering a 6-5 deficit from Netherlands after the first half.
Just like the second quarter, where Netherlanders made no mistake and outperformed all struggles of their challenging squad, they continued their incomparability in the third quarter. They secured four goals in the third round and blocked almost all efforts of British team, which managed to pass the ball just once in their opponent’s cage. The score remained 10-6 after the third round.
The fourth quarter was comparatively tougher than the previous ones, where Netherlands earned a great deal of scores. Nevertheless, in the fourth round, they overpowered all goal attempts of the British squad and advanced on the scorecard by accomplishing two goals. After the conclusion of fourth round, Netherlands enjoyed a commendable win over Great Britain by a margin of six goals.
Iefke van Belkum of Netherlands secured five goals in the game and was nominated as the best player of the match. Furthermore, after losing two matches in the tournament, Netherlands is now ranked third on the overall rankings list.
In addition, Netherlands has qualified for the quarterfinals and is now scheduled to play against Italy in their fourth match of the championships on Tuesday, January 24.
