Just wondering how far I can run Cat5e without plugging it into a router for a boost.

Depends on the entire situation. The higher in the house you have the router up, the better signal you will get everywhere; keep it out of the corners and in the middle of the room if possible. If you do this, you will have a good signal about 50-75 feet around, (this also depends on what else is in the house): cell phones, microwaves, tv's, etc.
