  1. Number one, go to the printers on your XP machine and check that it is shared.

Number two, make sure you have allowed printer sharing, file sharing and network discovery on the Vista PC.

Number three, ensure both machines are using the same workgroup.

On the vista PC, go to Start > Printers > Add a Printer to start the Wizard.

Choose "Add a Network, Wireless or Bluetooth Printer" and it should scan for and find the printer on your Dad's PC.

If it does not, click "The printer I want was not listed".

    Type

    "\\DadsPCName\PrinterName"

replacing the text with the name of your Dad's PC and the name you shared the printer as, and leaving out the " marks.

You MIGHT need to download Vista drivers for the printer also, as stated in the answer above.

Click next and you should be good to go.

  2. You have to enable sharing on both machines.

Then you have to go into the printer control panel on the Xp machine and right click on the icon for your printer.  Select Share and then in the window that open, tell it to allow sharing on the printer, and give it a network name.

You may have to reboot the computer after this, or not.

Next you need to download Vista drivers for the printer onto the Vista machine.   Next open the Add Printer wizard on the Vista machine.  Select the add NETWORK printer in the wizard.   Have the wizard search for the printer.  It should see the printer out on the network.   Select it.

When the add new hardware window opens, direct it to the file with the Vista drivers.

Once installed, you should be able to print to the Xp attached printer, as long as that computer is on and running.
