  1. Is your network set up as DHCP or STATIC?

DHCP will basically configure the computers automatically with an ip address, so anybody can connect and their computer will be setup with internet automatically.

STATIC needs to be configured manually with the correct ip address, subnet mask, gateway, and dns server before the computer can connect. So anybody can connect if they know that information.

In addition, you can set up your router to block specific MAC addresses. MAC address is a unique number address to a specific device, no two devices have the same MAC address. The MAC address cannot be changed. Every computer with a NIC card has a MAC address. Some people set up there routers to block a specific ip address, but that doesn't do any good because ip addresses can easily be changed.

I highly doubt you have a 8-port switch being how those are pretty much outdated. Are you sure its a switch, I would think that it was a router. A switch and a Router are very different. Basically a router is better. If you bought an 8-port switch than you got ripped off.

Anyways whichever one is acting as the DNS server out of the Router or Modem you just need to configure it to block certain computers you don't want to connect to the network. If your talking about a wireless network than all you need to do is put an encryption key on the network, but if your talking about a physical connection through an Ethernet cable than that's different.
