Networking problems?

I have my router then one switch connected in my network. Everything was fine till I 2nd switch in.

My set up is something like this. Router > 1st switch(3 pc's and server)

Now what I have done is take the cable from the server and put it into the 2nd switch. then run from the 2nd switch to the server and my media centre. Now my server won't connect to the network, saying it has limited or no connectivity. They media centre will find the network but won't connect to the internet!

I don't know enough about networks to fix it!

Hope some one can make sence of what i just said and help me!

  1. you may need a crossover ethernet cable if you are connecting 1 switch to another or alternatively if the first switch has an uplink port you should use that instead to connect to the second switch

  2. I had this exact same issue and it was my ZoneAlarm firewall blocking the internet. For a short time, disable your firewall and give it a try. If it works, then you need to configure it to allow access. If it doesn't work then you have to try other things, but I'm pretty sure it's your firewall.

And don't forget to turn it back on!

  3. It looks like you unplugged the server from the network by moving it to the other switch that isn't connected to your gateway (router) .  Did you uplink one switch to the other too?
