  1. No the addresses must not be the same.  If they are the same they interfere.

  2. You can't use the same ip address on two different devices on the same network.  Just change the last octet to another number.. for instance if one ip address is 192.168.1.10 make the other 192.168.1.11   make sure the subnet is the same (prob 255.255.255.0)  Let me know how it turns out.

  3. No, each device (computer) on the network needs a unique IP address. By giving both machines the same IP address, you've shot yourself in the foot.

    UPDATE:

Once each machine has its own unique IP address, you can ping them to test network connectivity. From one machine, ping the other by opening a command prompt window (Start, Run, "cmd.exe") and typoing "ping aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd" (where aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd is the IP address of the other machine). If that machine can be "seen" by the machine you're on, you'll get four "replies"; otherwise you'll get timeouts (I believe this is what Windows does - it varies depending on your OS).

If you've ever watched a movie about submarines in a war ("Hunt for Red October", etc), you know they'll sometimes send out a sonar echo to see what's around them; they're "pinging" the other ship. Same concept, only using an electronic ping instead of a sonar ping.
